Tripura becomes first Indian state to launch major business deregulation reforms
The reforms, launched in January 2026, are aimed at reducing the administrative burden on businesses. Authorities removed redundant procedures, digitalised approval processes and introduced a more transparent business environment. The changes affect industry, tourism, healthcare and the social sector.
In land use and urban planning, Tripura introduced a self-declaration procedure to change permitted land use for projects that comply with master plans and environmental standards. The measure has significantly reduced approval times.
As part of the industrial reforms, companies can begin operations under self-declaration procedures. Businesses in certain categories are also exempt from inspections for up to three years. Procedures for connecting to the power grid are being simplified as well.
As part of its digitalisation efforts, the state launched a centralised electronic bulletin system that provides unified access to laws, regulations, secondary legislation and government notifications.
Tripura also engaged leading national institutions to provide expert support for the reforms. Authorities expect the changes to increase the state’s attractiveness to investors.
