Russia and India explore joint urea production
Russia and India are discussing the launch of a joint urea production project, one of the key types of mineral fertilisers. The initiative was among the topics addressed during the visit of First Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation Denis Manturov to India.
Urea is widely used in agriculture, and India remains one of the largest importers of this product. As demand grows, Russia continues to increase supplies: by the end of 2025, exports of mineral fertilisers to India had risen by 40%. According to Manturov, Russia is ready to continue meeting the needs of the Indian market.
During the visit, Manturov held a meeting with Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi, as well as talks with members of the government. The parties discussed expanding trade turnover and strengthening cooperation—from raw material supplies to joint investment projects.
The potential launch of urea production could become the next step in deepening industrial cooperation and moving from trade towards localisation and the development of joint production chains.
Fertilisers and petrochemicals are becoming a key driver of Russia—India trade, supported by rising demand and expanding joint projects across the value chain. Learn more.
